I thank Niva Kramek of Philadelphia Global Water Initiative for the announcement that today November 19 is world toilet day
"World Water day gets a lot of (deserved) attention, but World Toilet Day
is something most of us celebrate without even realizing. Sadly, sanitation
is often overlooked in planning water supply systems, and usually is not recognized as a priority, despite the numerous ways in which it is
essential for human health, well-functioning communities, and public health
overall.
Though more than 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to safe
drinking water, close to 3 billion lack access to improved sanitation.
Improved sanitation is defined as, at minimum, a well-maintained and safe pit
latrine used regularly by less than a dozen people - and nearly 1/2 of the
world's population lacks even that. The lack of latrines, toilets, methods of
waste removal or wastewater treatment largely results from a reluctance to
address this issue - and to recognize it as a problem.
Additionally, methods for dealing with sewage can be expensive, and
government officials, communities, and NGOs often prioritize other needs. Sanitation
must be recognized as essential to health and development in order for the
terrible global situation to be remedied. Awareness and a willingness to discuss
this issue is where it begins."
